Planking the new National 12

I have now started planking the new National 12. Last year I was fortune enough to acquire Alan ‘Chipstow’ Jackson’s stock of plywood when he retired. For the hull planks, I am using some absolutely superb 7-ply 6mm Khaya/Gaboon, the quality and lightness of which is far better than anything you can get hold of now. The stringers are western red cedar.

Work starts on new National 12

Work has now started on Stuart Walsh’s new National 12, which is a 4-pank interpretation of Jo Richards’ Dead Cat Bounce. I have now got the building frames cut out and set up, with hog, centreboard case, apron, transom and stringers fitted and faired ready for planking to commence next week. It is 21 years since I last built a National 12, at the tender age of 17, so this is a real trip down memory lane for me.

New Boats on Order

Two new boats are now on order for launch in early 2016.

The first is another B.O.D. for a certain Mr Geoff Gritton. Anyone who knows Geoff will appreciate his attention to detail and without doubt his new boat, C56, will be something special.

The second is a project I am especially excited about. I have been asked to build a new National 12 for Stuart Walsh. It is going to be a Dead Cat Bounce modified for 4-plank construction.

More details on both boats to follow soon.

Brightlingsea C50 ‘Eider’ launched

Sue and Adrian Bouckley’s new BOD was finally launched last Friday from Brightlingsea Town Hard, preceded by a drinks reception at the Colne Yacht Club. Sue’s daughter Hannah Stodel was there with her GBR Paralympic team to dowse the boat in Champagne and to crew for her Mum along with sister Abbi on ‘Eider’s’ maiden voyage. Special guest was John Mullins, the boatbuilder who made the original BOD glass tooling for Petticrow and who started the work on Eider’s hull 10 years ago.
