Work starts on Geoff Gritton’s new BOD, C56.

I have now taken delivery of the latest BOD hull moulding from White Formula and am embarking on my part of the build. This boat is for Brightlingsea’s one and only Mr Geoff Gritton and is going to be something rather special. Anyone that knows Geoff will know that his attention to detail is the stuff of legend, and in all respects this boat will be the very best that we can make it.

B.O.D. C56 nearing completion

Geoff Gritton’s new B.O.D. C56 is nearing completion. The interior is finished, the deck structure is complete and the deck panels are cut and ready to fit this week. Then it is just the carlins and gunwales left to do before we are on to varnishing and fitting out.

National 12 3546 nearly ready

The new 4-plank Dead Cat Bounce is nearly finished. Just a bit of varnish work left to do on the decks and I will be ready for fitting out next week. The boat is going to be exhibited on the 12 stand at the RYA Dinghy Show next month. If anyone else wants one, I will be offering the boat at all stages of completion from bare shell through to ‘ready to sail’. More details to follow in the near future.

Hadron Progress

The new Hadron, which is to be known as the ‘Hadron H2’, is now progressing rapidly. The hull plug was completed in July, the mould has now been made and the first hull completed. The hulls are epoxy-infused carbon/aramid foam sandwich courtesy of Henry White at White Formula UK. I have now got the first hull, still in the mould, back at the workshop and am currently constructing the plugs for the buoyancy tanks. We hope to have two pre-production boats sailing before the end of the season on which the sail design and fitting layout can be finalised. HD sails have now been appointed as sailmaker.

National 12 hull finished

The National 12 has now been epoxied, faired, primed and taken off of the mould. The retro Pipedreamesque paint job looks great (I think!). I am now going to get straight on with the internals,

New National 12 progress

I have now finished planking up the 12 hull. The first two gunwale laminations and stem capping have also been fitted. Next, it will be faired, epoxied, painted and removed from the mould. The slightly peculiar shape of the original has been somewhat of a challenge to recreate in plywood, although I am very happy with the result. I have used bevel joints at the chines where possible, although where the angle between the planks is insufficient I have changed to butts reinforced with carbon tape.

Next phase of Hadron H2 development complete

I have now finished work on the Hadron H2 internal plug and the mould has been made by Henry White. The moulding should be done and bonded into hull #1 next week, after which I can start on the deck plug. We are aiming to have the first boat sailing some time in November.

Fairey Duckling Restoration

Fiona Brown’s beloved Duckling arrived at the workshop earlier this summer in a rather sorry state. It has now been stripped, epoxied and painted and new centreboard case, gunwales, foredeck and side benches have been fitted. Looking somewhat smarter now, and with a very happy owner!
