Paul Ross’s Bonezzi-built contender was in for repair recently. Whilst Paul was out sailing a chainplate pulled out of the deck. As the area was all covered in Pro Grip, it was initially difficult to assess exactly what had failed. When the covering was stripped away, the extent of the decay was quite staggering. Longstanding water ingress around the stainless chainplate had reduced the surrounding deck, hull skin and internal structure to mush. Further investigation revealed the other side to be nearly as bad – how the mast
stayed up for as long as it did is a mystery! All of the rotten timber was cut out and replaced ready for the Pro Grip to be refitted.
